Addressing health inequities by collaborating with our community is at the core of how we do what we do. We offer various health leadership training programs that allow us to engage directly with our community members to address health-related issues and guide research that impacts our communities. The ultimate goal of these programs is to build a network of community residents who can partner equitably in the existing infrastructure of community health initiatives and public health research and practice. Together, we can effectively identify health inequities and work toward achieving real systemic change.

Health Leadership Programs

COMMUNITY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Through the Community Research Fellows (CRF) program, we aim to break barriers to patient engagement in Patient Centered Outcome Research at Yale, by developing a network of community stakeholders in New Haven, Bridgeport, and Waterbury equipped to partner with Yale investigators. Despite the resources invested in research and patient care, these medical breakthroughs have had little impact on the complex health outcomes that continue to disproportionately affect low-income communities of color. The CRF program is designed to create a network of residents with knowledge, skills, and confidence for a successful partnership with researchers.

Applications for the 2025 cohort are now open. For questions about the program, please contact info@carenhv.org.

CARE HEALTH LEADERS PROGRAM

The CARE Health Leaders put their training into practice by focusing on neighborhood-level health issues, while engaging other residents and stakeholders towards the mission of improving health for their communities. Over its 10-year history, CARE has identified solutions to health challenges through community action in collaboration with residents from low-income neighborhoods and with numerous community partners. Together, we have implemented community gardens, mobile farmers’ markets, urban walking trails, and advocated for safer streets for biking and walking.  CARE formalized this work into New Haven Health Leaders in 2017, a leadership program that guides New Haven residents on the principles of community organizing and public health.

The program expanded to Hartford in 2023 and will expand to Bridgeport in 2025 (now collectively called “CARE Health Leaders”).

Applications for the 2025 cohort are now open. For questions about the program, please contact info@carenhv.org.
