Since 2018, CARE has been working with the City of New Haven Transportation, Traffic, and Parking Department (TT&P) to create the transformative initiative Safe Routes for All (SRFA). Together, we've collaborated with Street Plans, a nationally recognized active transportation consulting firm, to craft the SRFA Active Transportation Plan.
The SRFA Plan has been unanimously passed and adopted by the New Haven Board of Alders in September 2022, marking a significant step forward in promoting safe and accessible transportation options for all.
At its core, Safe Routes for All serves as a blueprint for the City, providing a roadmap to enhance walking, transit, and biking infrastructure, all while prioritizing equity. The goal is to make active transportation (walking, biking, taking the bus) easier for residents to reach their destinations safely and easily. This may be achieved by slowing traffic, reducing the distance that pedestrians have to cross, and by expanding and improving space for active transportation users. CARE has been instrumental in supporting community engagement throughout the process, ensuring that the voices of residents from lower-income neighborhoods and Black and Brown communities are heard and valued in the plan's development.
The next phase of our work involves supporting TT&P in the SRFA Implementation Task Force. Together, we're dedicated to turning plans into tangible actions, making our streets safer and more welcoming for everyone.
By fostering collaboration and emphasizing inclusivity, we're paving the way for a transportation landscape that serves the needs of all New Haven residents.
